Kindness is Contagious
For the last two years, we have been struggling with Covid and its effects on our school, our city, and our society. While Covid has demonstrated that it is very contagious, I want to turn our attention to something that is even more contagious - kindness.
February is the shortest, often coldest month of the year, but it also contains two of the most inspirational days of the year.
On February 14th we celebrate Valentine’s Day. We often hand out valentine cards to our classmates or demonstrate our continued affection to those close to us through gifts, flowers and chocolates. Everyone loves to receive a thoughtful valentine, and it is a joy to share valentines with others! This is a great day to show kindness.
The second significant day in February is Pink Shirt Day. On Feb 23rd schools across Canada recognize Anti-bullying by wearing Pink Shirts. It is a day to acknowledge that when we live in a community it is important that we all support each other. When we as a school show our support for each other it makes all of us better. We are in this together, and we are stronger together. The support we have for each other benefits us all!
In Ephesians chapter 4, Paul gives instructions on how Christians ought to live, and at the core is the idea that we should be kind and caring towards each other.
Ephesians 4:29-32
29 Do not let any unwholesome talk come out of your mouths, but only what is helpful for building others up according to their needs, that it may benefit those who listen. 30 And do not grieve the Holy Spirit of God, with whom you were sealed for the day of redemption. 31 Get rid of all bitterness, rage and anger, brawling and slander, along with every form of malice. 32 Be kind and compassionate to one another, forgiving each other, just as in Christ God forgave you. (emphasis added)
As we come to the end of February, may this be the guiding principle as we finish out the school year - may we show kindness to all. May our school be a place where we exhibit kindness to others and may it be a place where we receive kindness from others.
